Nearly three weeks ago New Zealand MP’s sadly chose to impose the world’s most extreme abortion law on their nation.
The abortion legalisation bill passed its third reading in Parliament and it was passed by 68 votes to 51 (a rather narrow margin) However this result could have been different had 18 more MP’s made a decision to stand up for life; if only they had said “No we won’t allow women or babies to be hurt by this harmful law so we choose to vote against” unfortunately this wasn’t the case.
It’s clear to see this law has been disguised as choice, free reign, women’s rights etc. Yes women’s rights are very important, this isn’t the issue though. The issue is the most fundamental right of all…..Right to Life! Without it all other rights are pointless, without the right to life you have nothing!
With women’s rights being so important, it’s rather sadly ironic that introducing this change in law will take away the rights of countless women. It takes a way the inherent right to life for baby girls who would have grown into adult women with so much potential to do amazing things, now this bill tells us their life has no value they are thrown out in the medical waste just like that. All because there is a new law that gives parents the autonomy to abort their baby for any reason up to birth and because of this they get to choose the sex of their baby - It’s heart-breaking to know this is what life has come to.
Here’s a list of what the new law allows:
Abortion will now be available on demand, for any reason, up to birth
Sex selective abortion will be legalised
The current 20 week limit for disability selective abortion will be scrapped and abortion will be available up to birth for disabilities including cleft lip, club foot and Down’s Syndrome
There will be no requirement that a doctor must be involved with providing an abortion
There will be no legal requirement that babies born alive after a ‘failed’ abortion are given medical support
There will be no legal requirement that pain relief be given to babies being aborted between 20 weeks and birth
There will be no legal restrictions on controversial methods of abortion such as intact dilation and extraction abortions (also known as partial birth abortions)
After reading the details on this list, I assume the MP’s who voted for this law overlooked all this in their heart; they really couldn’t have thought about it deeply. If that was the case, their vote could have been different or at the very least the law could have been changed in some way to be less extreme.
Normally polling is very important to MP’s and governments, they don’t usually want to be disliked by the people; they like to please the public so they have a better chance at being voted in the next elections. So it’s rather surprising that the MP’s didn’t listen to the New Zealand public on such an important issue like this.
Polling shows that only 2% of the population support this new law. 93% of New Zealand women oppose sex-selective abortion being legal and 94% of women supported the current legal standards for abortion before the law change.
With that being said, the abortion legislation committee only heard oral feedback from 139 people despite over 25,000 people wanting to give feedback (this is such a small proportion of people in comparison to the large number of people who opposed this).
The Prime Minister rushed the bill through Parliament in the hopes that not many people would get wind of this atrocity. This bill was passed during the Corona Virus crisis, at a time when everyone was distracted by this Pandemic; this was an opportunity for them to sneak the abortion bill through knowing the public were so against it.

Consequently, this bill has seen a huge backlash especially from the disability community. It has led to over 1200 people with Down’s Syndrome (and their families) calling on the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to keep a pre-election promise to not introduce abortion up to birth for those with Down Syndrome. However although they challenged the Prime Minister and reminded her of her own words, unfortunately the public were denied a final say on this change in law.
I just think it’s so sad that during a time when nations across the world are fighting to protect people and save lives (especially the vulnerable in our society) that this government decided to not choose life for the most vulnerable of all….unborn babies!
Can we please have some laws introduced to help women in these situations? Can we offer real help instead of more hurt and pain? That would be helpful. I can assure you, if women had more options and better support more widely available abortion numbers would dramatically decrease - This is our hope at least!
We pray that this law change will make people everywhere re-think their stance on abortion, we hope that there would be more decisions for life instead of death, hope instead of hurt, Love instead of pain.
We also pray that the New Zealand government will realise and understand the mistake they have made by introducing this new change in law and repeal it and give life a chance. We pray that the blinders would fall off their eyes so God can open the eyes of their heart and soften the hardness.
“If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (2 chronicle 7:14)
We are currently living in unprecedented times. Now more than ever we need to repent and humble ourselves; this current climate is giving us the wake-up call we all needed! We can make a difference by praying for these people who have been deceived by the enemy to believe what they are doing is right, let us also pray for people to turn their heart back to God - But what we shouldn’t do is turn a blind- eye.
With that being said, we pray for God's peace and protection during this season.
Love & Blessings
