Pregnancy Development

The first trimester weeks (1-12)

Week 5

  • The fertilised egg has all the baby's genetic code which determines the looks and some characteristics and gifting's of this new little life

  • The Egg blossoms into an embryo in the mother’s womb

  • The Umbilical cord forms

 

Week 6

  • The Baby is around 0.16 inches

  • While the heart has been beating for around 2 weeks already the Heart and lungs continue to form

Week 8

  • The baby is the size of a coffee bean

  • They can move and swim

  • The eyes, mouth and stomach have already started to form

  • Webbed fingers and toes arrive

  • All major organs almost fully formed

Week 11

  • The baby is around 2 inches around the size of a strawberry

  • Teeth, intestines and genitals are forming

Week 12

  • The baby is around the size of a garlic bulb

  • The nose and chin take shape

The second trimester weeks (13-27) 

Week 15

  • The baby is around the size of a large Potato

  • All their major organs are fully formed

  • An ultrasound scan can show the baby’s gender

Week 19

  • They are the size of an Aubergine (Eggplant)

  • By now they are already flipping and rolling and making fists

  • The baby is now hearing sounds

  • White, waxy material protects their skin

  • The main lung airways start to form

Week 24

  • The baby is now around 12.5 inches the size of a Pineapple

  • They weigh around 1.5lbs

  • By now fingers and toes are fully formed

  • They can hiccup now

  • They could survive outside their mother’s womb if they were born early

Week 25

  • They can recognise the sound of their Mum’s voice, along with other familiar sounds

  • The baby is sleeping 80% of the time now

Week 26

  • They can now suck their thumb

The third trimester weeks (28-40) 

Week 30

  • The baby is now 16 inches long

  • Their skin is becoming smoother

  • Their toenails have started growing

  • Their eyes open and close and respond to light

Week 33

  • The baby weighs around 4lbs

  • They are swallowing, yawning and practicing to breathe

  • Their brain is controlling their body temperature

Week 37

  • The baby weighs around 6lb the size of a Honeydew Melon

  • They've been practicing breathing for a few weeks now

  • The baby has already developed sleeping patterns

  • Their skin is pink and they have chubby legs

  • Their bones and muscles are ready for the outside world

Week 39

  • Baby weighs the same as a Crenshaw Melon around 6.5lbs

  • Their lungs are ready to breathe and cry

  • Their head moulds into a cone shape as they move into their mother’s birth canal

Week 40

  • The baby weighs over 7lbs

  • They are ready for the outside world
